PLA Galaxy has glass microspheres suspended through it, which catch the light as the part turns and give a deep, glittering finish that shifts with the viewing angle. Four colours, all dark and deep-toned — the effect needs a dark base to read properly.

The interesting part isn't the look, it's the toughness. Galaxy's impact strength is roughly double PLA Basic's, which makes it one of the more resilient PLAs Bambu makes despite being sold on appearance.

At a glance

AMS / AMS 2 Pro

Worth knowing

Impact strength is 55.4 kJ/m² against PLA Basic's 26.6 — a little over double. If you have had PLA parts crack when dropped or shocked, this is the one that stops doing that, and you get the finish as a bonus rather than the other way round.

That toughness comes with give. Tensile strength is 26 MPa against Basic's 35, and stiffness 1540 MPa against 2580, so Galaxy bends further before it breaks rather than resisting the load. For a bracket that must not flex, Basic or Tough+ is the better choice; for something that gets knocked about, Galaxy.

The glass microspheres are abrasive, so use a hardened steel nozzle and stay at 0.4mm or above — 0.2mm is not compatible. Brass will print it, but it will wear far faster than it would on plain PLA.

Storage

Bambu specifies under 20% RH, sealed with desiccant, and 55°C for 8 hours before printing. A sealed box with fresh desiccant does the job, or a filament dryer if you have one. Drop a cheap hygrometer in the box so you're not guessing.

As filament takes on moisture you'll hear popping or hissing at the nozzle, then see stringing and rough surfaces, and eventually the strand goes brittle enough to snap in the tube. That's almost always moisture, not technique. Dry it at 55°C for 8 hours and it usually comes back.

Figures from the Bambu Lab PLA Galaxy technical data sheet v1.0, except nozzle size — Bambu's sheet lists 0.2 mm, which we do not recommend for an abrasive filament. Real-world results vary with printer, settings and model geometry.
